Your Magical Journey at Disneyland While Pregnant: An In-Depth Guide – Which Disneyland attractions are safe to ride during pregnancy?

Congratulations! Either you or someone you know is expecting a little bundle of joy and are hoping to visit the happiest place on earth–the Disneyland Resort. This is an in depth guide created to help you make the most out of your trip while taking into consideration what attractions and experiences may best suit your needs. In this article, I will be referencing “you” as the expectant mother in the article for ease.

Health and Safety First: A Notice for Expectant Mothers

DISCLAIMER: This article should be used as general guidance and for entertainment purposes only

  • Consultation with a Medical Professional: If you are an expectant mother and have any concerns about your health or your baby’s health, make sure to schedule a consultation with a qualified medical professional/healthcare provider. They can give you professional guidance as it relates to making informed decisions about travel plans, or participation in certain events (e.g., theme park attractions).
  • Responsibility: Any decisions you make about visiting any theme park, should be made and determined by your best judgment. Health and safety is priority number one, so participating in certain attractions or experiences may or may not be ideal depending on your circumstances. It is your responsibility to find out what is appropriate.
  • Theme Park Policies: Many establishments (like theme parks) may have their own differing policies and guidelines as it relates to expectant mothers and what they offer in terms of guest experiences. Be sure to review and understand their rules and regulations, and follow them (while of course using your best judgment)! Again it is your responsibility.
  • Liability Release: Whenever you visit any theme park, you already have agreed to abide by their terms and conditions to enjoy their attractions and experiences, like releasing them and any of their third parties from any liability when you spend time on their property. All of this information here is not meant to scare you, but just some food for thought. A lot of this is standard when visiting theme parks.

Things you should consider before riding any attraction inside the Disneyland Resort

Disneyland was created for visitors from all ages and imaginations to enjoy! Naturally mothers are a part of this group. Determining which attractions are safe to ride depends on a variety of factors and requires careful consideration within the following areas:

  • Lap Bars and Seating: Attractions that utilize lap bars or have restrictive seating arrangements can pose discomfort or even risks to pregnant guests. These features are often found in more thrilling rides, which might also indicate bumpier experiences.
  • Ease of Boarding and Space Considerations: The ease with which you can board and exit attractions, along with the space available once seated, is also worth considering. Attractions with complicated access or limited space, like “Alice in Wonderland” and “Peter Pan’s Flight,” might present challenges, especially as your pregnancy progresses.
  • Listening to Your Body: It’s important you remain attentive to your body’s needs throughout your pregnancy. If you need to take frequent breaks do so!

Practical Tips for a Comfortable Visit to Disney While Pregnant

Consider these practical tips when you are visiting Disney while pregnant:

  • Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Use the park’s many options for snacks and drinks to stay well-fed and hydrated. Complimentary ice water is available throughout the Disneyland Resort.
  • Comfort and Mobility: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing to help manage the physical demands of spending the day at the park – but be sure to pace yourself and listen to your body as needed. If you are further along and believe walking for longer periods of time may be an issue, consider renting a wheelchair or scooter for easier mobility around the park ahead of time! Visit the Disneyland Resort during a season that has less crowds because this typically means less wait times in lines which can be helpful to reduce any stress on your body (e.g., feet, back etc).
  • Think about renting lockers to store anything heavy you don’t need immediate access to and pack any essentials that may be unique to your needs or comfort.
  • This is not necessarily a must for everyone, but consider purchasing the Disney Genie+ to help you with lowering the time you wait in line for attractions. I like to use the Disney Genie+ every so often (like if I have dining reservations and still want to ride as many attractions as I can in that day).
  • And this one I can’t stress it enough, but please use mobile ordering for your food! When you do this, you won’t have to wait in long standby lines and you’ll be able to eat quickly.
  • Plan for Rest and Relaxation: Utilize Disneyland’s Baby Care Centers for a quiet space to rest and recharge. You can use these while you are pregnant or if you already have some little ones. Take some time to nap in your nearby hotel room and when you’re ready head back to the parks.

The Baby Care Center can be found next to Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop and across from The Bakery Tour in San Fransokyo Square.

The Baby Care Center in Disneyland can be found at the end of Main Street, U.S.A., next to the First Aid area.

Disneyland Attractions Considered suitable to ride during Pregnancy according to Disney

This information was gathered after I researched Disney’s website. There they have list attractions based on “Accessibility and Advisories” for expectant mothers who are planning a visit to the Disneyland Resort while pregnant.

  1. “It’s a Small World”. This is a gentle boat ride taking you through a journey of colorful landscapes and cultures, with of course the most catchiest tune or annoying tune depending on who you ask. Its smooth navigation and lack of sudden movements make it perfect for pregnancy, allowing for a relaxing global journey around the world without any stress on you or your baby.
  2. The Enchanted Tiki Room: This attraction is a seated experience/show that is in an air-conditioned environment, where you’ll be entertained by tropical singing birds and blooming flowers. The lack of physical strain and the ability to sit down throughout the show make it ideal for expectant mothers seeking a retreat from walking or heat. It is not quiet by any means so keep this in mind.
  3. Jungle Cruise: Enjoy floating along inside a boat with a punny jungle cruise skipper. During your journey you will be exploring the animatronic wildlife and lush scenery of jungle. It is smooth sailing and does not have any jolts or drops. The only thing to consider here is being mindful of entering and exiting the boat because of the rocking motion.
  4. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: This is a slow-moving ride through Pooh’s whimsical world that most consider to be gentle in its motion. The scenes you’ll see are vibrant and entertaining. However this attraction does have a lap bar so be mindful of your own desire for space and comfort.
  5. Pirates of the Caribbean: This attraction has only two mild drops, but for the most part, this boat ride is smooth sailing through pirate-themed scenes. It’s generally considered suitable for pregnancy due to its predominantly calm waters, but discretion is advised due to the potential for slight jostling when the boats dock. Also if the ride is backed up, there are times that you will experience other boats bumping into you from behind. The bump isn’t exactly gentle in my experience (since I have a back injury) so I just tend to glance back to check if I need to brace myself.
  6. The Disneyland Railroad: Offering a scenic and seated tour around Disneyland, this train ride is an excellent way for expectant mothers to see most of the park while resting. The occasional stops might require standing briefly, but overall, it’s a relaxing journey with minimal physical demands.
  7. Haunted Mansion: This attraction provides a slow-moving tour of a the mansion with ghostly guests. Its mild in pace does not have jerky movements, making it a comfortable experience for pregnant guests. This attraction does have a lap bar and lowers automatically, so if you’re worried about space (based on the stage of your pregnancy) use your best judgement.
  8. Mad Tea Party: This attraction allows you to control the intensity of your spinning tea cup, so you can make it mild. This flexibility ensures that expectant mothers can enjoy the fun without discomfort, tailoring the ride to their comfort level. However the space to get into the teacup is rather small. I am pretty tall at 5’9″ and a half, so getting seated inside the teacup feels tough because my knees are right up against the turning base/wheel. It personally makes me feel cramped but I still enjoy it.
  9. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway: Enjoy the journey through Toontown through train! This the attraction is smooth for the majority of the time and has a few moderate but manageable sways like the “dancing” scene with Daisy. Here the ride feels as if it is jolting to the left and right slightly, it’s still considered suitable by Disney for expectant mothers.

Always remember, your comfort and well-being come first, so feel free to adjust your plans when it comes to riding attractions as needed throughout your visit.

Disneyland Attractions to Avoid During Pregnancy

While many attractions offer magical experiences suitable for all, there are attractions that are best avoided during pregnancy due to their intensity and the potential risks they pose. Here’s a breakdown of which attractions to steer clear of riding and why:

  1. Space Mountain: This high-speed indoor roller coaster’s rapid drops and sharp turns can cause jarring movements, posing a risk to pregnancy safety by potentially stressing the body in ways that are best avoided during this sensitive time.
  2. Matterhorn Bobsleds: This ride is has tremendous amount of warning labels, and for a good reason. Known for its bumpy and rough ride, the Matterhorn simulates a high-speed bobsled race down a mountain track, which can feel uncomfortable, jolty and bumpy which is not recommended for pregnant guest – or guests with pre-existing back problems, neck problems, joint problems, etc. Many of us Disney locals joke about this attraction being good to ride as a visit to a chiropractor!
  3. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: It’s the wildest ride in the wilderness for a reason! The quick twists, turns, and sudden drops found on this roller coaster can create a level of discomfort and pose safety concerns for expectant mothers, especially due to the increased risk of strain on the abdominal area. This is also another attraction that does have a lap bar restraint.
  4. Indiana Jones Adventure: With its sudden stops, sharp turns, and simulated perilous situations, this ride’s intense motions and unexpected jolts are a few reasons pregnant guests should opt out to avoid potential harm.
  5. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (formerly Splash Mountain): This log ride, featuring a significant drop into water, creates a jarring impact that, along with the possibility of getting soaked, makes it unsuitable for those expecting. This attraction at the date of this article publication is not yet open.
  6. Star Tours – The Adventures Continue: The motion simulator’s abrupt movements and simulated space travel can cause discomfort due to the unpredictable shaking and spinning, which are not ideal during pregnancy. Some people also may experience nausea if they are prone to motion sickness.
  7. Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin: Despite appearing mild, this ride involves jerky motions as the cars spin through Roger Rabbit’s animated world, potentially leading to discomfort for pregnant riders seeking gentler experiences. This attraction also has a lap bar and you can feel very cramped in this small space.
  8. Rise of the Resistance: This adventure, while visually STUNNING, includes a drop and sharp movements throughout that are cause for concern for expectant mothers as they are quick.
  9. Gadget’s Go Coaster: Although designed for younger guests, this mini roller coaster’s sharp turns and drops can be unsettling for those pregnant. Instead try going on another attraction that is more relaxed and ground-level.
  10. Astro Orbiter: The tight spinning motion combined with the ability to adjust the height of the rocket can result in dizziness and discomfort, making it less suitable for those who are expecting. Also the space here is practically non-existent. If you have other little ones who may want to ride this attraction consider asking for support from another adult in your party to go with them.
  11. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run: While offering an interactive flying experience, the unpredictable jerking motions, especially if piloted by inexperienced riders – (which happens about 90% of the time, especially when children are flying the ship) – can cause major discomfort, making it an attraction that should be avoided by pregnant guests.
Signs you will see outside of rides and attractions that give a warning for expectant mothers.

Always consult your healthcare provider or medical professional when planning trips/visits to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your growing family if you have concerns.

Exploring Disney California Adventure Park While Pregnant: Enjoyable Attractions

If you’re anticipating the arrival of a little one and planning a visit to Disney California Adventure Park, you’re in for a treat! With a park hopper pass or a magic key, you’ll discover a selection of attractions that are both safe and delightful to ride.

  1. Toy Story Midway Mania!: Dive into a captivating 4D carnival experience with Woody, Buzz, and the gang, where you’ll get to show off your target-shooting skills through mini games with minimal jarring movements from the car. This one does have a lap bar so be aware of how you may feel with the spacing and the stage of your pregnancy.
  2. Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters: Take a joyous spin in Luigi’s dancing cars. The attraction has some swaying which some may consider mild, which can give a pleasant experience for many without causing any discomfort, perfectly accommodating for expectant mothers.
  3. Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree: Mater invites you to a delightful square dance in his junkyard, offering a ride with light swinging to the music. This attraction provides a moderate level of movement that is not overly jarring but definitely more than Luigi’s. If you’re unsure whether you’d want to ride this, take a view of them from afar so you can judge and determine if you feel comfortable with this.
  4. The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure: Submerge yourself into Ariel’s world and see her fairytale come to life with detailed scenes from the movie. This attraction is very smooth and calming and goes at a very easing going pace which makes it an excellent option for those expecting, providing a stress-free underwater exploration. This ride does have a lap bar but just like every other ride with a lap bar, but it isn’t as confined. But of course use your best judgement!
  5. Pixar Pal-A-Round – Non-Swinging Gondolas: Experience stunning views of the park from the safety and comfort of the NON-swinging gondolas. This attraction offers a relaxing way to enjoy panoramic views without the intensity of swinging. They do have the options for swinging gondolas but this should definitely be avoided during pregnancy.
  6. Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind: Despite how the name of the ride sounds, it’s not that intense. Here you are rotated inside whimsical memory orbs at a moderate intensity. The motion is carefully designed to be enjoyable without abrupt movements for children. This can be considered suitable for expectant mothers.
  7. Web Slingers: This ride is as intense as you make it. Here you will be spiderman on this interactive adventure, where you fling your arms out to shoot webs at little spider robots to help Spiderman save the campus. This low-intensity ride avoids vigorous activity, making it manageable and fun for those who are pregnant.

These attractions are considered suitable options for expectant mothers, but it’s crucial to remember that every pregnancy is unique. So if you have any concerns, be sure to prioritize your health and safety by first consulting with a healthcare provider before embarking on your Disney California Adventure Park journey.

Navigating Disney California Adventure Park While Pregnant: What to Skip

While Disney California Adventure Park has a lot to offer as far as fun and excitement, pregnant guests are advised to steer clear of certain attractions/rides. To ensure both your well-being and that of your unborn child, here’s a general guideline of attractions you might consider avoiding and the reasons they might not be the best choice to ride during pregnancy:

  1. Incredicoaster: Well this goes without saying. You can take one look at this and quickly understand that this isn’t the ideal attraction for pregnant guests. This is a high-speed roller coaster with swift drops and intense turns that exert substantial force on the body. This makes it unsuitable for pregnant guests due to the risk of undue stress and discomfort it would cause.
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!: Just like with Incredicoaster, you can take one look at the towering attraction and hear the screams from the top and understand that this too isn’t a pregnant guest’s preferred ride. Known for its rapid drop sequences, this attraction involves vigorous movements that could potentially cause discomfort or harm to expectant mothers, making it a ride to bypass during pregnancy.
  3. Radiator Springs Racers: This is one of Disney California Adventure Parks more popular attractions, but this ride poses a risk to pregnant guests based off of its high speeds and turns.
  4. Grizzly River Run: Navigating through turbulent rapids, guests will experience unexpected drops and movements that might not be advisable for pregnant guests. This is also an attraction that will leave you wet to some degree. So if anyone else in your party who is not pregnant will be riding, advise them ahead of time to bring a poncho of some sort to keep dry. I have some Disney ones listed in my amazon storefront that are more affordable than getting them straight from the parks.
  5. Goofy’s Sky School: This attraction has sudden turns and drops and may lead to discomfort due to the sharp, unexpected movements, which are best avoided during pregnancy.
  6. Silly Symphony Swings: This attraction has you seat in a swing that flies over at increasing speeds which can cause some discomfort for those expecting. If you want to enjoy a ride that is similar but more suitable, consider the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind.
  7. Soarin’ Around the World: Although generally gentle, this simulated flight includes moments of swift movement and elevation changes that might cause discomfort for some pregnant women, indicating a need for caution. Also this may cause motion sickness due to the realistic flying motion guests experience.
  8. Jumpin’ Jellyfish: This attraction is gentle with its rise and fall, and is considered less intense than other rides. However it still involves a sensation of dropping that may not be ideal for expectant mothers prioritizing maximum comfort.
  9. Golden Zephyr: Offering peaceful views and a gentle spinning motion, this ride is on the milder side. Of course some pregnant guests may opt out of this one because of concern of motion sickness.

Although certain attractions are recommended to be avoided for now, the park is filled with enchanting experiences that are perfectly suitable for pregnant guests.
