Muzeo Museum Fall Exhibits Review 2026: Disney Art, Anaheim History & What to See

What does Ariel losing her voice, Cinderella twirling in her dress, and the movement of an animated animal have in common?

Before some of these moments made it into Disney films, artists were studying real performers, clothing, expressions, movement, and even animals to understand how to bring animated characters to life.

That creative process is at the center of Capturing Life, Creating Character: The Art of Live-Action Reference, a new traveling exhibition from the Walt Disney Archives that made its world premiere at Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center in Anaheim.

Michael and I were recently hosted by Muzeo to experience the exhibition along with the museum’s other Fall 2026 exhibits. As someone who loves Disney and fashion, getting a closer look at how real performers and costuming helped shape animation was one of the things I was most excited to see.

And there was more to explore than I expected.

We spent about an hour and a half at Muzeo moving between Disney animation history, SHAG’s colorful interpretation of Disneyland, the relationship between Disneyland and Anaheim, and the city’s own history.

If you’re planning an Anaheim vacation this fall, especially one that already includes Disneyland, this is an easy way to experience another side of the city while these limited-time exhibitions are here.

The three Fall exhibitions run through November 1, 2026. Here’s what you’ll find inside and what I’d know before planning your visit.

About Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center

Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center is located in downtown Anaheim at 241 S. Anaheim Blvd. The museum combines a modern Main Gallery with Anaheim’s historic Carnegie Library, bringing art, culture and local history together in one destination.

Muzeo’s regular hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

For Disney fans, its location in Anaheim makes the Fall 2026 exhibitions particularly fitting. Disneyland opened here in 1955, and Muzeo’s current lineup explores that connection from several very different perspectives.

But you don’t need to be a Disney fan to appreciate the museum. That’s part of what makes Muzeo interesting as an addition to a larger Anaheim trip.

What’s at Muzeo for Fall 2026?

Three limited-time exhibitions opened at Muzeo on August 8 and continue through November 1, 2026:

• Capturing Life, Creating Character: The Art of Live-Action Reference, presented by the Walt Disney Archives
• The Happiest Place: SHAG Imagines Disneyland
• Anaheimland

Muzeo also houses Anaheim: A Walk Through Local History in its historic Carnegie Library.

What works especially well about this combination is that you aren’t seeing the same Disney story repeated from gallery to gallery.

One exhibition takes you behind the scenes of Disney animation. Another explores Disneyland through an artist’s point of view. Anaheimland shifts the focus toward the people and city surrounding Disneyland, while A Walk Through Local History gives you a broader look at Anaheim itself.

Walt Disney Archives Presents Capturing Life, Creating Character: The Art of Live-Action Reference

The main reason many Disney fans will probably find Muzeo this fall is Capturing Life, Creating Character: The Art of Live-Action Reference.

The Walt Disney Archives created and assembled this world-premiere exhibition for Muzeo, where it debuted on August 8, 2026. After its Anaheim premiere, the exhibition is expected to travel to additional locations that have not yet been announced.

That makes Anaheim the first place to experience it.

How Live-Action Reference Helped Bring Disney Animation to Life

One of the things this exhibition does well is make an animation technique that could sound technical very easy to understand. Disney artists used live performers as references for movement, facial expressions, staging and body language. They also studied how costumes and different fabrics moved and even observed animals to understand how they naturally behaved.

The goal wasn’t simply to copy what was happening in front of them. Those references gave animators something real to study before translating the movement into animation.

Throughout the exhibition, you can see how this process contributed to films including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King.

You begin to notice familiar Disney movies differently when you realize how much observation could sit behind a movement that lasts only a few seconds on screen. Movement, Costumes and Fabric. This was naturally one of the areas that caught my attention most. Fashion is such a visual form of storytelling, and animation still has to communicate the movement of clothing without an actual piece of fabric being present.

Disney artists studied performers to see how costumes responded to the body, how fabric fell, turned, moved and settled.

Seeing that process connected two things I already love in a way I hadn’t really considered before: fashion and animation.

My Favorite Parts of Capturing Life, Creating Character

This isn’t an exhibition where you’re only looking through display cases.

Several interactive elements let you experience some of these concepts yourself, and that’s where the idea of live-action reference really started to click for me.

The Twirl Study

One of my favorite interactive elements was the twirl study, featuring characters including Mulan, Cinderella, Alice and Tiana.

You get to try the movement yourself while seeing how a simple turn changes the way clothing follows the body.

As someone who loves fashion, this was one of those little details I could have spent much longer looking at.

A twirl seems simple until you start thinking about everything an animator has to account for – the body moves first, fabric follows, and every character’s clothing responds differently.

Practicing Pantomime as Ariel

This one immediately reminded me of The Little Mermaid after Ariel loses her voice and has to communicate through her facial expressions and movement.

Trying it myself was fun, but it also made the purpose of live-action reference easier to understand.

If a character can’t tell us what she’s thinking, her movement has to do some of that work instead.

Staging and Scale

Another interactive area explores staging and scale with set pieces and props.

You get a better idea of how a performer might react to an object or environment and how an animator could then use that performance as inspiration. These interactive pieces are what keep the exhibition from feeling like you’re simply reading about animation history.

You get to participate in the idea behind it.

My Favorite Part: Ariel and The Little Mermaid

My favorite part was probably predictable.

Ariel has always been my favorite Disney Princess, so I spent some extra time with Under the Scene: The Art of Live Action Reference, which included a behind-the-scenes look at how live-action reference was used for Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

You’re not only looking at Disney history. You’re seeing some of the work and observation behind characters many of us have known for most of our lives.

The Happiest Place: SHAG Imagines Disneyland 2026

Southern California artist Josh Agle, better known as SHAG, is known for his colorful mid-century modern style. His relationship with Disney began with a commission celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Enchanted Tiki Room in 2003.

At Muzeo, you can see his interpretations of familiar Disneyland attractions including:

• The Haunted Mansion
• The Enchanted Tiki Room
• Jungle Cruise

Anaheimland 2026: Disneyland Through Anaheim’s Story

Disneyland opened in Anaheim in July 1955, but this exhibit isn’t simply another timeline of Disneyland history.

Instead, it looks at the relationship between the park and the people who lived and worked around it through photographs, memorabilia, histories and artifacts.

If you’re visiting from outside Southern California, this gives you a little more context about the destination you’re actually traveling to, not just the theme park you’re visiting.

A Walk Through Anaheim History

For an even broader look at the city, head into the historic Carnegie Library for Anaheim: A Walk Through Local History.

The collection ranges from fossils and agricultural tools to memorabilia connected with more modern Anaheim culture.

That includes pieces connected to Anaheim Stadium, Disneyland and the Anaheim Ducks to name a few.After spending so much of our visit looking at Disney’s relationship with Anaheim, I liked having this broader piece of the city’s history included too.

How Much Time Do You Need at Muzeo?

Michael and I spent about an hour and a half exploring Muzeo. That gave us enough time to move through all four galleries, stop for the interactive experiences, watch the video presentations, take photos and spend a little longer with the sections that interested us most.

I’d plan for around 90 minutes as a comfortable starting point.

If you’re someone who reads every display or spends more time studying artwork and archival pieces, you could easily stay longer.

Why Muzeo Fits Into an Anaheim Vacation

If you’re already planning a Disneyland vacation, you don’t necessarily have to choose between the parks and exploring somewhere new.

Muzeo is easy to add to a larger Anaheim itinerary because you don’t need to dedicate an entire day to it.

It can work especially well for:

• Disney fans interested in animation and Disney history
• Art and design lovers
• Families looking for an educational activity
• Southern California locals planning an Anaheim day trip

We spent about 90 minutes here, which still leaves plenty of room for lunch, dinner or another Anaheim experience before or afterward. Sometimes that’s exactly what I want from a trip, one more place that gives us something new to see without overcomplicating the day.

Is Muzeo Worth Visiting During Fall 2026?

For Disney fans, Fall 2026 is an especially interesting time to visit Muzeo.

Capturing Life, Creating Character was easily the highlight for me. Seeing how movement, performance and costuming were studied before being translated into animation brought together Disney, fashion and filmmaking in a way I hadn’t experienced before.

SHAG offers a completely different artistic interpretation of Disneyland through its art. Anaheimland connects the park back to the city and people around it. And A Walk Through Local History gives you a broader look at Anaheim beyond Disney. Together, they make the visit feel much more complete than a single Disney exhibition.

If you’re going to be in Anaheim before November 1, 2026, I’d set aside around 90 minutes and add Muzeo to the trip.

And after these particular exhibitions move on, Muzeo is still worth keeping on your Anaheim list. Its changing exhibitions give us another reason to see what’s there the next time we’re in town.
